Sadiq Khan is facing accusations of a humiliating U-turn after refusing to oppose a new pay-per-mile scheme, just six days after promising he would "stand up to this Government" if ministers tried to bring one in.

At a London Assembly meeting on November 20, the Mayor pledged: "I will stand up to this Government [...] if it tries to introduce pay-per-mile in London."

The comment was made in response to a question from Conservative Assembly Member Emma Best.

But less than a week later, Chancellor Rachel Reeves used the Autumn Budget to announce a 3 pence-per-mile charge on electric vehicles.
