It appears that some Canadian seniors are having a hard time recovering after major surgeries.
A national study conducted by St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto suggests that one in six seniors suffers from a new disability within the first six months after a major, noncardiac surgery.
The study , led by Dr. Duminda Wijeysundera, a physician-scientist at St. Michael’s, queried more than 2,000 seniors aged 65 and older in Canada.
According to the study, senior patients who suffered from a new disability within six months to a year post-surgery also encountered other negative post-op experiences, such as more pain, greater depressive symptoms and poorer quality of life.
A larger portion of of respondents said they also regretted their original decision to have the procedure.
