SMITH COUNTY, Tx. — On Saturday, a juvenile detention officer was brutally attacked inside the Smith County Juvenile Detention Center— now, officials say he faces a long and difficult road to recovery.

According to investigators, 29-year-old Officer Demontray Taylor was struck repeatedly by a teenage detainee who used a handicap shower rail as a weapon. The assault continued until an on-site nurse rushed in and pulled the teen off of him.

“Demontray is an excellent officer here. The kids loved him, and he got along well with the staff. So it hit close to home,” Director for Smith County Juvenile Services Ross Worley said.

Taylor was taken into emergency surgery with severe head injuries. He remains in stable condition, but doctors expect additional surgeries in the coming days.
