PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Tazewell County’s Sheriff Department received federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation to catch drunk drivers, especially tonight, one of the biggest drinking holidays.

It’s known as ‘Blackout Wednesday.’ Bars are expecting a flood of people to enjoy a night out before the holiday.

Enforcement runs through December 2, 2025, with deputies looking for seat-belt violations, speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving from alcohol or drugs, including cannabis.

Law enforcement says Thanksgiving brings heavier traffic, longer trips, and more drinking.

“We want to make sure you arrive safely, and that includes people who are not even going out that way,” said John Shallenberger, Deputy Sheriff for Tazewell County.
