Responding to ongoing public concerns about corrosion and winter road treatments, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) states that it has scaled back and more precisely targeted the use of brine on Kenai Peninsula highways.
In recent years, many residents have voiced worries that liquid de-icing solutions contribute to vehicle corrosion and damage to infrastructure. DOT&PF said this winter’s approach reflects that feedback.
According to the department, brine is now being applied only on select high-speed, high-traffic corridors where preventing ice from bonding to the pavement is most critical for safety. Brine can keep packed ice from forming and allows plows to clear roads more effectively during storms.
