LINCOLN, Neb. —

Lincoln's only homeless shelter, the People's City Mission, rang in the Thanksgiving holiday by serving its largest meal of the year.

“This tops last year's Thanksgiving," Earl Johnson, a guest at the Mission, said. "It really tops it."

It was a reason to smile during this season of giving, both for the hundreds of guests, many of whom are facing hard times, and for the legion of volunteers.

“We feel we have gratitude, and we’re blessed,” said volunteer Jim Prange. “And we wanted to share that with others.”

Guests arrived at the sounds of friendly chatter and the bustle of volunteers passing out heaping plates of turkey, stuffing, and all the holiday fixings. Pies piled high with whipped cream followed shortly after. Volunteers even cleared plates when guests were done
