COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina lawmakers are raising concerns about a federal proposal that would temporarily block states from creating or enforcing their own artificial intelligence (AI) regulations for the next decade.

The proposal, being discussed in Washington, would impose a nationwide moratorium on state-level AI rules. It has been floated as a proposed addition to the now-law 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' a rumored executive order from President Donald Trump's administration, and an addition to the National Defense Authorization Act.

Supporters argue it would prevent a confusing patchwork of laws across 50 states as the country races to keep up with rapid technological advancements.
