A Kelowna man charged with the first-degree murder of his wife was sentenced this week to 12 months in jail for assault by strangulation and threatening to kill a woman and two other people.

The Crown had asked for James Plover to be jailed for 18 months while the defence had asked for nine months. Provincial court Judge David Ruse handed down his sentence on Thursday.

“The court sentenced James Plover to one year of jail for the assault by strangulation,” Ann Seymour, acting communications counsel for the BC Prosecution Service, said via email. Plover also received six months sentences for each of the three threat convictions, to be served concurrently, and concurrent to the one-year sentence for strangulation.

Plover was credited with 218 days for the 145 days he spent in pre-sentence
