SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Every year, nonprofits put together meals so that the less fortunate can take part in a Thanksgiving tradition. Working in the kitchen at the Union Gospel Mission in Sioux Falls has been rewarding for some of its employees.
The Union Gospel Mission employs plenty of former residents. In fact, the entire kitchen staff includes former residents. On Thursday, they had the help of a number of volunteers, but it didn’t make it any less bittersweet and symbolic to serve the place that changed their lives.
Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year at the Union Gospel Mission. On a normal day, 450 meals are served over the course of breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Thanksgiving Day, staff said at least 700 meals are served.
