A hockey arena in Winnipeg's East Kildonan area is closed due to an "unexpected and significant" structural issue, city officials say.

Crews were working on a restoration project at the Terry Sawchuk Arena when staff discovered an issue that is concerning enough to require the immediate closure of the facilities, a city spokesperson said Thursday.

"We understand this is disruptive to arena users and are working hard to reopen the facility as soon as it is safe," the spokesperson said in an email to CBC. "We are in the process of contacting all rental groups to help relocate ice time, wherever possible."

The city did not provide specifics as to what the structural issue is. It said it's working on a plan to address it, including options for remediation and a timeline.
