In Michigan, 18-year-olds can vote, serve in the military, serve on a jury, own a firearm, marry and enter into contracts.

Some state lawmakers want to add carrying a concealed pistol to that list.

Currently, only residents ages 21 and older can apply for and receive a license to carry a concealed pistol in the state. Legislation put forward by state Rep. Jason Woolford, R-Howell, would lower the age to 18.

“Right now, Michigan tells us that an 18-year-old soldier or Marine that are mature enough to deploy overseas and carry a service weapon for our country but, somehow, is not responsible enough to carry a sidearm to protect themselves in their own neighborhood,” said Woolford, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “This doesn’t make sense to me.”
