Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in nearly eight decades has killed at least 128, city officials announced shortly after making fresh arrests in connection with the blaze.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang said at a briefing on Friday that officials couldn’t rule out finding more bodies, as he detailed how construction materials erected for a renovation project at the housing estate enabled the fire to spread.
The blaze began on the lower floors of a building in Wang Fuk Court, where netting around bamboo scaffolding caught fire, he said. As the bamboo collapsed under the intense heat, it fell away and onto materials encasing a nearby block in the eight-tower complex in northern Hong Kong.
Among the dead, the identity of 39 has been confirmed. Roughly half of those who died were found inside
