It has been suggested that Steven Gerrard rejected a return to Rangers because he is waiting on the chance to manage Liverpool.

The Reds legend was locked in talks with Andrew Cavenagh over a return to the Ibrox dugout when Russell Martin was sacked back in October.

However, after pulling out of the race to become the club's next manager, Gerrard cited 'bad timing' as his reason for not taking the post, having been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.
