Licensed moose hunters will be permitted to travel through a community-operated checkstop on the Rice River Road during Manitoba’s December moose season, following a Manitoba Court of King’s Bench ruling that affirmed Bloodvein River First Nation’s authority to screen for drugs and alcohol but not to bar access to public land.

But within hours of the decision, new comments from Bloodvein River First Nation suggesting that all non-Indigenous hunters will now be escorted through the territory have raised fresh concerns and confusion, and left the Manitoba Wildlife Federation (MWF) questioning whether the agreement is already shifting.
