OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Urban League of Nebraska was formed in Omaha on this day in 1927, beginning nearly a century of community service and advocacy.
A picture from the Nebraska Historical Society shows the league’s recreation group from 1934.
The group initially focused on employment opportunities for minorities before later shifting to integrating union groups and promoting new home building for the African-American community.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the Urban League led efforts to hire more African-American teachers in Omaha Public Schools.
The Urban League of Nebraska continues its work today, helping with scholarship opportunities and after school programs. The organization also teaches job skills and financial independence.
