In a further escalation of Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, the U.S. president declared in a series of social media posts late on U.S. Thanksgiving Day he would “permanently pause migration” from poorer countries.

Trump shared the extended online statement following Wednesday’s shooting of two West Virginia National Guard members deployed to patrol Washington, D.C., allegedly by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the 29-year-old suspect originally from Afghanistan.
