Officers shot a man who refused to follow the order to surrender after he cut himself with an object, the Los Angeles Police Department said Friday.

Police said the officers went to the area of Francis and Vermont avenues at around 7:14 a.m. and found the man in his 30s.

The LAPD said the man was cutting himself with an object although the department did not specify what kind of item he used.

After the man refused the order to surrender and give up his object, officers opened the fire, hitting the man.

He was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not immediately known.
