Review at a glance
“People hear music but we want people to listen to it,” so says Andrew Gower, actor in Ellis but also front man of Gustaffson, who have this year released their debut album, Black & White Movie , and made a splash with an approach that more about tangible integrity - think vinyl, short films and unifying messages - than dancing with dogs on a TikTok video.
In fact their latest single Dance to the Algorithm, which comes early in the set in this electric gig at the Courtyard Theatre in Shoreditch, is pithy piece of Motown soul which feels like a key anthem of the Now. To whose tune are we dancing these days? Not to our own, probably not even to a human’s. And this idea of bringing back the humanity to music is what Gustaffson are all about.
