A spokesperson for Lifesaving Society Manitoba is putting out a warning for all those thinking of venturing out onto frozen bodies of water.
Executive Director Lynne Stefanchuk says it will take quite some time yet before the ice in Southern Manitoba is thick enough to walk on.
Lifesaving Society Manitoba recommends new, clear, hard ice be at least 10 centimetres (four inches) thick for walking, skating, cross country skiing or ice fishing. It recommends ice be at least 12 centimetres (five inches) thick for either a large group of people or an ATV or snowmobile. Lifesaving Society Manitoba recommends ice be 20 to 30 centimetres (eight to 12 inches) thick for a car or light truck. It recommends ice be 30 to 38 centimetres (12 to 15 inches) thick for a medium truck or SUV.
