President Donald Trump called a reporter a "stupid person" during an exchange on Thanksgiving.
Taking questions from the press after a call with service members, Trump was discussing the Nov. 26 shooting of two National Guard members near the White House. The suspect has been identified as an Afghan national who came to the U.S. in 2021, and Homeland Security has said it would review all asylum cases approved under the Biden administration.
"Your DOJ IG just reported this year that there was thorough vetting by DHS and by the FBI of these Afghans who were brought into the U.S., so why do you blame the Biden administration?" CBS News' Nancy Cordes asked Trump in Florida, saying the suspect had been vetted and "came up clean."
"Because they let him in, are you stupid? Are you a stupid person?" Trump responded. "Because they came in on a plane along with thousands of other people that shouldn't be here and you're just asking questions 'cause you're a stupid person."
Exchange on DC shooting follows 'quiet piggy' comment
Trump's exchanges with reporters have been getting extra attention since he told a reporter on Air Force One, "quiet piggy," as she asked a follow-up question about the Jeffrey Epstein files on Nov. 14.
The suspected gunman in the shooting of the National Guard troops previously worked with the U.S. military and CIA-backed forces in Afghanistan. Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, came to the U.S. under "Operation Allies Welcome," a refugee program that sought to evacuate vulnerable Afghans who cooperated with U.S. forces during the war.
One of the victims, U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died on Nov. 27. The other victim, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, was still in critical condition as of Nov. 27, according to Trump.
Lakanwal was shot shortly after the attack and is hospitalized in serious condition. He is expected to face an upgraded charge of first-degree murder after one of the victims and the FBI is investigating the incident as “an act of terrorism.”
The Trump administration also suspended immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals and said it would re-examine green card holders from 19 countries it deemed "high-risk."
