Rachel Homan has struck first in the women's final at the Montana's Canadian Olympic curling trials.

Her Ottawa-based team held on for a 5-4 victory over Christina Black's side from Halifax in the opener of the best-of-three final at Scotiabank Centre.

Black had a chance for a multi-point end with her final throw in the 10th end, but settled for a single.

Game 2 is Saturday with the decider, if needed, on Sunday.

The opener in the best-of-three men's final will be played later in the day.
