There are many factors affecting gas prices, but one of the reasons Londoners may have seen regular gasoline prices in the range of $1.40 per litre recently has to do with margins, said Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy.

McTeague said gas station operators are no longer willing to swallow some of their roughly 10-cent margin to give consumers the lowest price.

“Traditionally, gas stations in London . . . have always liked to throw away their retail margins,” McTeague said. He noted one of the reasons gas bars have transitioned to “mini convenience” or “mini grocery stores” is because there are larger margins in food than fuel.

It should be noted that as of Friday morning premium gas ranged from about $1.55 to $1.77 per litre in London, while
