As thousands of its members gather in Edmonton, Alberta’s governing United Conservative Party (UCP) says it’s continuing its efforts to break through in the provincial capital despite its historical struggles in the city.

The UCP’s annual general meeting began Friday at the Edmonton Expo Centre.

Party leader and Premier Danielle Smith is not subject to a leadership vote this weekend, though as many as 4,500 party members will vote on the makeup of the party’s board as well as on dozens of policy resolutions ranging from flags, vaccines and purchasing the RCMP.

Winning in the meeting’s host city has been a high hurdle for the party since its foundation in 2017, winning just one of a possible 40 seats.
