The Vatican announced on Nov. 21 that Pope Leo appointed Bishop Stephen A. Hero as the Archbishop of Edmonton.
Postmedia met with Hero to talk about his history with Edmonton, his auspicious return to the city, and his vision for the future of Edmonton’s archdiocese.
Q: Congratulations on your selection as Archbishop of Edmonton. How did you feel when you learned of being chosen by the Pope?
A: I was surprised. Bishops don’t go back to the place. A bishop isn’t chosen from the clergy of a diocese unless the diocese is really big. So I wasn’t really expecting it, I was looking at some of my other brothers around me or in Canada.
I went through a whole range of emotions, I think. Surprise, and at a certain point, of course, joy to come home and be closer to my family and a lot of people
