MAINE, USA — While many in Maine spent Black Friday shopping, farmers across the state were celebrating something else: Maine Grown Christmas Tree Day.

Governor Janet Mills officially recognized November 28 as a day to honor the state’s Christmas tree industry, which contributes nearly $19 million a year to the economy and employs around 800 people.

At Red Barn Christmas Tree Farm in Etna, Ryan Mayo walked through rows of balsam firs—trees that he and other Maine growers work year-round to shape into the classic Christmas tree.

“You want it to be triangular, kind of that classic tree shape,” Mayo said. “Christmas tree growing is a massive industry here in Maine. There’s a lot of us little farms around.”
