ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

The University of New Mexico football team picked up a historic win to take one step closer toward a debut in the Mountain West championship.

The Lobos, led by first-year head coach Jason Eck, won over the San Diego State University Aztecs after a defensive stop in a double overtime thriller. The final score was 23-17.

The Lobos had a chance to win in overtime but fumbled the ball inside the five-yard line and the Aztecs recovered. That sent the game into a second overtime.

In the second OT, Jack Layne found Cade Keith for a 25-yard touchdown to make the score 23-17. The Lobos then held SDSU on downs to clinch the win.

UNM is currently in a three-way tie atop the conference along with Boise State and SDSU. The conference title game will not be decided until Saturda
