RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Scouting America Troop 107 is continuing a tradition that dates back to before World War II, selling freshly cut holiday trees to fund youth programs.

The annual tree lot at Reno Public Market on Plumb Lane and South Virginia Street serves as the troop’s primary fundraiser, covering costs for summer camp, merit badges, outdoor gear and leadership activities.

Scouts purchase and transport trees from Oregon, set up the lot and handle all customer service. The hands-on experience gives them training in sales, teamwork and running a small business.

Many scouts also earn their Salesmanship Merit Badge through their work at the lot, said Eric Dewitt-Smith, committee chair for Troop 107.
