A fatal crash shut down part of Interstate 79 in Washington County on Thanksgiving night, with icy road conditions reported in the area, South Strabane Fire & Emergency Services said.
The 13-vehicle pileup — which involved multiple cars and a tractor-trailer — happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, on the flyover connecting I-79 northbound to I-70 westbound, according to fire officials. Crews arrived to find several victims trapped inside a passenger vehicle.
A passenger in that vehicle died at the scene. The Washington County Coroner identified her as 64-year-old Jamie Doreen Wiles of Wheeling, West Virginia.
A dog riding in the same vehicle jumped out after the crash and was killed in the pileup, authorities said.
Wiles was the front-seat passenger in a car that lost control on the icy roadway, the coroner said. The driver and a rear passenger were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately released.
At least ten additional patients from other vehicles were transported to hospitals across the region as part of the mass-casualty response. Fire officials said ambulances from two neighboring counties were called to assist.
Pennsylvania State Police said troopers were also handling multiple weather-related crashes at the same time, including a two-vehicle collision on I-79 south at the Washington–Allegheny County line and a jackknifed tractor-trailer on I-70 between the Chestnut Street and Jessop Place exits.
Washington County 911 reportedly responded to 52 emergencies within two hours, prompting the activation of the county’s mass-casualty plan as dispatchers managed simultaneous serious incidents, according to WPXI.
The Thanksgiving evening crash caused significant traffic delays and detours as crews worked through freezing conditions to free victims, treat the injured, and assist state police with reconstruction.
