COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The Columbus airport reopened Friday with a new concrete runway after nearly four months of renovations, just in time for the Christmas travel season.
The runway was converted from asphalt to concrete during the closure. Airport officials said the concrete surface is more durable and will allow heavier planes to land.
Friday after Thanksgiving marked the first day commercial flights could take off and land at the renovated airport.
Local travelers excited for convenience
Phenix City resident Kevin Mebuge was among the first passengers to use the reopened airport.
“I’m very, very excited and happy about it,” Mebuge said. “Columbus is close by to Phenix City, so this is a great opportunity, great chance to just fly from here to Atlanta, then to my final destinatio
