The Maple Leafs sounded as if they felt sorry for themselves, as if they believed they deserved a better fate.
They didn’t, not after turning a two-goal lead into a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Capitals in Washington on Friday.
“It’s a little bit sour coming away from this one without any points,” Leafs captain Auston Matthews told reporters. “It’s tough. You feel like the game is right there. They tie it up, you try to get it to overtime and you have a breakdown and now you’re chasing (the game) to try to tie it up.”
