GREENSBORO, N.C. — As Small Business Saturday returns, two longstanding downtown institutions — Scuppernong Books and Hudson’s Hill — are underscoring just how essential locally owned shops are to Greensboro’s identity, economy, and sense of community.

Both businesses were founded with a similar mission: to fill a need in downtown Greensboro and to create spaces that residents could rely on for connection, culture, and craftsmanship. Scuppernong Books was born nearly 12 years ago when its founders recognized the city lacked an independent bookstore. Hudson’s Hill, which evolved from a merger of two small businesses in 2014, grew out of a desire to preserve Greensboro’s textile heritage and to offer a curated collection of American-made goods.
