I’m not sure the first Thanksgiving was on Turtle Island.

Ooh, did I ruffle any feathers with that statement? I hope so. I’ve been mostly focused on the warm and fuzzy of late. Thought I’d inject a little flavor into this one. That’s what turkey basters are for, right?

What I mean is that I don’t buy the narrative of the harvest festival we celebrated this week (and Canadians celebrate in mid-October) as being the love-fest between natives and immigrants as has long been taught in schools. Because, well, there’s that whole dearth of historical evidence and accuracy thing.

What I do believe, however, is that feasts of thanksgiving long predated pilgrims and their scanty colonies along what we call the Atlantic Coast. Native Americans have oral histories indicating various autumn festival
