JACKSON — Wyoming lawmakers tabled a bill last week aimed at reining in property tax exemptions, after the conversation was derailed by debate over a Jackson affordable housing project.

The Wyoming Legislature’s Joint Revenue Committee convened Nov. 18 to talk in part about restricting property tax exemptions for buildings “used primarily for government purposes.” But after an Albany County resident briefly voiced his concerns about the state and the University of Wyoming not paying property taxes, the Flat Creek Apartments took center stage.

The original bill was tabled in a tight 7-6 vote. When a motion to table a bill is brought by a committee member, it cannot be debated.

There was no lawmaker discussion after the motion was called.
