PEPPER PIKE, Ohio
Theft, search warrant: I-271
Officials with a Stow-based company reported Nov. 25 they had provided a $3,000 piece of equipment to state contractors for use in the freeway construction zone. When a worker arrived that afternoon to retrieve the “Speed-Mac,” it was gone.
Police learned that the device -- which counts vehicles and their corresponding speeds, then relays the date to electronic signage -- was equipped with GPS tracking.
The signal now showed up about 135 miles south in Caldwell, Ohio, right off I-77 in Noble County, where police contacted the sheriff’s office.
Deputies there obtained a search warrant for the property in question and seized what was left of the partially-disassembled Speed Mac, minus the stand and solar panel, valued at $1,000.
