For the past three years, the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, Inc., Frederick County Garden Clubs (i.e. Green-walled Garden Club, Tasker’s Chance Garden Club and The Garden Club of Frederick) along with Bryan Dwyer, Scott Leader Troop 274, have collaborated to restore and revitalize the South Frederick Arboretum at the Frederick County Public Schools’ Earth and Space Science Lab.

On Oct. 25, 10 new native shrubs were planted to augment the understory of the larger trees, and to provide food and shelter for smaller birds and animals. The understory is the layer of vegetation beneath the canopy of larger, mature trees, consisting of smaller, shade-tolerate trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants.
