After the rush of Black Friday, a quieter event awaits the holiday shopper. Small Business Saturday (SBS) is an annual event recognized on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. The purpose is to support local and small businesses. Now recognized nationally, SBS has grown into a major holiday shopping tradition for the average consumer. It was started to drive consumer spending towards small businesses in order to strengthen local economies and communities.
Cynthia Skipworth, owner of Hippie Chicks Boutique, said that the holiday season is about "putting food on the table for locals." Her motivation for running a business is to share a more personal experience with customers instead of online shopping. For Skipworth, resilience is part of the job.
