WHITTIER — Pioneer did a good job keeping South El Monte away from the end zone for much of Friday’s CIF Southern Section Division 14 football championship game on Friday.
But not in the clutch.
South El Monte scored on its final two drives in the fourth quarter to pull out an emotional 14-6 come-from-behind victory to claim the school’s first championship ever.
Eagles quarterback Michael Maldonado broke a 6-6 tie with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Gabriel Canchola with 21 seconds left, and then Ivan Lopez sacked Titans quarterback Noah Anderson on the final play of the game to seal it, sparking a wild celebration.
