Rapist and murderer Brian David Steckel remained coherent and articulate for several minutes, despite receiving the lethal injection.

The 36-year-old American, who had been found guilty of the brutal rape and killing of 29-year-old Sandra Lee Long, managed to spend his final moments speaking composedly to relatives and onlookers, even as a deadly mixture of drugs flowed through his system.

Those present at the execution reported hearing distinct clicking sounds from the injection apparatus and witnessing convulsions, indicating the substances may not have functioned as planned.
