Utah Sen. Mike Lee has a solution — and is now searching for the problem. Unfortunately, it's located in one of America's most beloved wilderness areas, the Boundary Waters.
As the News Tribune reported Nov. 3 , Lee introduced a bill that would give the Department of Homeland Security access to federal border lands, allowing the development of surveillance infrastructure and roads and bridges — in direct apparent violation of protections enshrined in the Wilderness Act of 1964 . Sen. Lee, it seems, presumes an epidemic of unregulated border crossing from Canada. However, data from Canadian authorities show that illegal crossings in July 2025 declined more than 90% from the peak in June 2024.
