PETOSKEY — ReLeaf Michigan recently announced the winners of its 16th biennial Michigan Big Tree Hunt contest, and one impressive winner was found right here in Petoskey.
The Michigan Big Tree Hunt contest took place from spring 2023 through August 2025. According to a community announcement, the contest drew more than 500 entries from 76 of Michigan’s 83 counties. Each county’s winning tree was verified in person by arborists, foresters and conservation professionals.
A black walnut tree measuring 126” in circumference was found in Petoskey and submitted by Mark Stringer. It claimed the top spot for Emmet County.
Certificates and prizes were awarded in several categories by ReLeaf Michigan.
Just in time for Giving Tuesday, ReLeaf Michigan has also launched its Giving “Tree” Tuesday
