After Thanksgiving there’s Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday — and then there’s Giving Tuesday, where nonprofits around the country aim to raise donations to help those in need.
The annual event is celebrated each year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, which this year is Dec. 2.
Giving Tuesday traces its roots to 2012, when it was introduced by the United Nations Foundation and the 92nd Street Y in New York, which both wanted a more charitable alternative to the consumerism seen in the days after Thanksgiving.
Charities use the “Giving Tuesday” hashtag on social media to drive awareness of their causes and raise money for their mission, hosting fundraisers and events. In 2019, Giving Tuesday became its own independent organization separate from the 92nd Stre
