Social Security recipients are set to receive their December payments in the coming weeks, arriving ahead of the program’s annual cost-of-living adjustment , which takes effect in January.

Most beneficiaries receive their payments based on the day of the month they were born, but those who began collecting retirement, spousal or survivor benefits before May 1997 follow a different schedule. Their checks arrive on the third of every month.

Supplemental Security Income is distributed separately, typically on the first of each month. When that date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment is issued on the final business day of the preceding month.
