A serious crash on the M25 has caused significant traffic disruption in Essex this evening. Drivers are currently facing long delays, with queues stretching up to 11 miles and wait times exceeding 100 minutes. The incident occurred on the M25 clockwise between junctions 29, near Upminster, and 30, near Aveley. National Highways confirmed that lanes three and four were closed due to the collision. A spokesperson stated, "There is currently approx. 7.5 miles of congestion on approach, causing delays of 50 minutes above usual journey times." As the evening progressed, the situation worsened. By 18:11, the delays had escalated to 11 miles of congestion, with drivers experiencing residual delays of 100 minutes, despite the scene being cleared and all lanes reopened. Traffic maps from Google indicated that the Brentwood area was particularly affected, with slow-moving vehicles reported throughout the region. Earlier in the evening, traffic began to ease slightly, with National Highways reporting delays of up to an hour. However, the situation quickly deteriorated again, leading to a significant backlog. Live images captured during the peak of the incident showed a massive queue of vehicles on the M25, with delays extending back towards Brentwood and Romford. As of now, while the lanes have reopened, drivers are still advised to expect considerable delays as congestion continues to clear. Authorities are urging motorists to remain patient and to consider alternative routes if possible, as the aftermath of the crash continues to impact travel times on this busy motorway.
