One of the busiest arenas on the northeast Avalon is running a $100,000 deficit for the first time in its history, but the mayor of Torbay is not overly concerned.

Craig Scott says margins on facilities like the Jack Byrne are typically very thin, and all it takes is to lose one event to see the loss.

Jack Byrne Regional Sport & Entertainment’s Board took the unusual step this year of requesting a subsidy from each of the towns who own a partial stake in the facility to keep them in the black.

Scott says the arena has been operating with no subsidies for the last 15 years, and he says it’s entirely possible that the board may be able to turn that around before the end of the fiscal year.
