In Charles Dickens ‘ “A Christmas Carol,” the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future move Ebenezer Scrooge to mend his stingy curmudgeonly ways. “A Christmas Carol” is back in full festive force at Hartford Stage and figures in other shows such as Legacy Theatre ’s new “Scrooge & Marley” and TheatreWorks New Milford ’s “What the Dickens,” both opening this week, and Westport Country Playhouse ’s forthcoming return of “A Sherlock Carol.”

Other theaters are eschewing Scrooge entirely for their holiday entertainment. Of course there’s TheaterWorks Hartford ’s “Christmas on the Rocks,” which always switches up its scenes each year and this year also features a new lead actor.
