A protest at a major Glasgow conference has sparked a row between a union and the council, as footage shows a security worker grabbing an activist’s neck. Campaigners from tenants’ union Living Rent marched into the Old Fruitmarket on Friday morning to disrupt the annual State of the City Economy event.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said protesters “stormed” the conference and “physically attacked venue staff”. A union rep denied any workers were harmed and said the council’s security was “aggressive”.

In a video, from the union, a security worker grabs a woman’s neck. Living Rent has also alleged another member was punched.

One council source said: “You shouldn’t be coming to your work and getting injured. This wasn’t a political protest, it was thuggery.”
