A Northumbria University academic has led research in Antarctica which could reveal new hope for the climate. Dr Kate Winter, associate professor in the school of geography and natural sciences, has travelled to the freezing southern continent several times for fieldwork at the cutting-edge Princess Elisabeth Antarctica research station.
A research paper she has led published in the Nature Communications journal finds that as Antarctica's ice sheets thin due to climate change, newly exposed mountain peaks could significantly increase the supply of vital nutrients to the Southern Ocean, potentially enhancing its ability to absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide.
