The Met Office has issued a rare amber weather warning for Wales, predicting up to 120mm of torrential rain and severe flooding over a 24-hour period. The warning is effective from midnight on Monday until 11.59pm the same day.
The Met Office cautioned that "fast-flowing" or "deep floodwater" could pose a "danger to life". Homes and businesses are at risk of flooding, which may lead to significant damage. Commuters are advised to prepare for potential delays or cancellations to train and bus services.
Driving conditions are expected to be hazardous due to spray and flooding, with some roads likely to be closed. There is also a risk of power cuts and loss of other essential services for some residents and businesses.
In addition to the amber warning, several yellow weather warnings are in effect across 77 areas in the UK, as heavy rain continues to impact the region. The Met Office stated, "An area of heavy rain is expected to move over central and south Wales between late Sunday and late Monday. While rainfall amounts will vary, some heavy and persistent rainfall is likely to fall, especially over high ground, for example, Bannau Brycheiniog. Rain should clear to the east Monday night."
The regions and local authorities affected by the amber warning include Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the severe weather approaches.
