Our most effective engagement tool is the From the Editor Subtext account, where I send weekday morning texts about stories in the works, questions we’re exploring or help we need. Subscribers — for free — respond in large numbers, and their thoughts help guide our coverage.
When I say large numbers, I mean it. I crunched them this week, and through Tuesday, the text subscribers have sent me more than 37,300 messages in 2025, in response to 225 messages. I doubt any editor anywhere gets more feedback than I do, and it’s a treasure.
