As the Clark College men’s soccer team prepared to play in the Northwest Athletic Conference playoffs in early November, Jeff Lukowiak knew the team’s next loss would be his last game as head coach.

One week prior, Lukowiak and his coaching colleagues joined a conference call with their athletic directors when they learned Clark College’s administration was considering reducing athletic scholarships across all 11 programs by nearly 50 percent from the previous year.

That meant coaches wouldn’t have scholarship funds available to offer new recruits for the 2026-27 academic year. They would also be forced to cut or reduce scholarship aid for returning players.

Lukowiak submitted his resignation letter to athletic director Laura LeMasters on Oct. 25 as a result of the pending decision, and
